Hi friends,
It's been quite a scary week -- I haven't even had a chance to write about this in the blog yet, and I don't know if I ever will. A couple of weeks ago, Nathan had his first ever seizure and then last week a second. It's a frightening thing, to watch your little boy be totally limp, unresponsive and to have to call 911. The past few days have been full of doctor and hospital visits, blood testing, EEG and MRI scans.
Just a few minutes ago, we got some good news. Test results show that there doesn't seem to be anything major. No tumors and no major spikes. Whew. Our neurologist prescribed some meds to control the epileptic seizures and we'll go on our lives like normal. Doc says that most kids will grow out of this within a couple of years.
In doing some research (okay, I did *a lot* of research) I found out that epilepsy is the 3rd most common neurological disorder (after Alzheimer's and strokes), yet it's the LEAST understood condition. Scientists don't know what causes it and there's no cure for it. There's so little that we understand about the human brain.
Our big challenge now researching ways to control seizures without long term medication. There's got to be another way that doesn't involve my kid popping a pill every day, right?! For now, though, this is the best, as seizures can be extremely dangerous, especially with such an active, outdoorsy kid who loves to swim every day.
(big deep breath)
Okay, so now how about some great recipes to share? I've got a couple I know you'll love -- and a big electric smoker to give away!
Here's to health....
